About the City

Hamilton, Ontario

800,000+ (metro)ON, Canada

Hamilton sits at the western end of Lake Ontario, about an hour southwest of Toronto, and is the ninth-largest city in Canada with a metro population over 800,000. The Niagara Escarpment cuts through the middle of it, splitting the city into the lower city and the Mountain, and carrying more than a hundred waterfalls inside the municipal boundary. Hamilton built its reputation on steel, but the economy today is anchored by healthcare and education: Hamilton Health Sciences is the largest employer in the region, and McMaster University and Mohawk College bring roughly 45,000 students into the city. Over the past decade Hamilton has taken in significant migration from Toronto, drawn by housing that costs a fraction of what it does in the GTA, and that shift has built a young professional and creative population around the James Street North arts district. The local tattoo scene grew with it, and it is now one of the busiest in Ontario outside Toronto, with no specialized removal provider to serve it.

Who lives here

Canada's ninth-largest city and the anchor of the western Golden Horseshoe. Hamilton has absorbed a decade of inbound migration from Toronto driven by housing costs, which has pulled the median age down and brought a large young-professional and creative population into a historically industrial city. McMaster University and Mohawk College add roughly 45,000 students, and Hamilton Health Sciences is the largest employer in the region.

Notable attractions

  • Over 100 waterfalls along the Niagara Escarpment, including Webster's and Tews Falls
  • Royal Botanical Gardens - the largest botanical garden in Canada
  • James Street North arts district and the Supercrawl festival
  • Dundurn Castle and the Art Gallery of Hamilton
  • Tim Hortons Field, home of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Why Hamilton

A strong market for Studio Kiku.

Hamilton is a market of 800,000 people sitting an hour from Toronto, and clients here do not drive downtown for a service they can get locally. The city has one of the densest concentrations of tattoo studios in Ontario outside Toronto, a young creative population, and no provider specializing in picosecond laser tattoo removal. Hamilton also closes the gap in our Golden Horseshoe coverage between Mississauga and St. Catharines.
