Laser PMU brow removal on all skin tones

The PicoWay's picosecond technology makes laser PMU brow removal safer across a full range of skin tones. Here's how Studio Kiku approaches each case.

If you've been putting off booking a PMU brow removal consultation because you have a darker skin tone, the hesitation is understandable. Older laser systems genuinely did carry a higher risk of hyperpigmentation on deeper complexions, and that reputation has stuck around. Technology has changed what's possible. Studio Kiku built its approach around delivering safe results for clients across every skin tone.

The Candela PicoWay laser fires energy in picosecond pulses, each measured in trillionths of a second. Those shorter pulses generate less heat in the surrounding tissue compared to older nanosecond lasers, which is what makes the PicoWay a safer option across a wider range of skin tones. The team selects laser settings carefully at every session based on skin tone, pigment depth, and treatment area.

Why skin tone is a real consideration, not a reason to skip removal

Every laser technician working on medium to dark complexions has to account for melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. With older Q-switched nanosecond lasers, the heat generated during a session was broad enough to trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), a reactive darkening of the skin after irritation. For clients with deeper skin tones, that risk was real enough that many removal providers historically turned those clients away.

The PicoWay's picosecond pulse length changes that equation. The energy reaches the target pigment particles faster and more precisely, with less thermal spread into the surrounding tissue. Studio Kiku's technicians adapt the settings to each client rather than applying a one-size-fits-all protocol. That personalised approach is what separates a safe outcome from a compromised one.

How the laser targets brow pigment

PMU brow removal follows the same clinical process as laser tattoo removal: the laser energy targets implanted pigment, shatters it into smaller fragments, and the body clears those fragments gradually through the lymphatic system. Permanent makeup pigment tends to sit more superficially in the skin than body tattoo pigment, so clients often see results sooner.

What makes PMU removal more nuanced is that most brow pigments contain warm undertones, layers of red, yellow, or both that artists mix in to help the brows heal warm after the initial procedure. The dark pigment lifts first, and once that layer clears, the undertone becomes visible.

"So it's not actually turning red or turning yellow. It's revealing the undertone," says Billy DeCola, Studio Kiku founder. "And depending on what pigment was used, there may be reds in there, there may be yellows in there, there may be a combination."

Knowing this before the first session means you won't be caught off guard if the brows look different after session two than they did after session one. It's part of the process, not a sign that something went wrong.

What to expect after your first session

A single session produces meaningful fading for most clients. Because permanent makeup pigment tends to be superficial, some visible change is usually apparent right away. The body continues clearing fragmented pigment for weeks after each session, so the full effect develops gradually rather than all at once.

In the hours after treatment, expect redness and mild swelling around the brows. The immediate aftercare keeps that reaction manageable:

  • Apply a cold compress to the brows on the day of treatment and the following day.
  • Keep the area cool. Use cool water when washing the face.
  • Avoid sun exposure on the brows, jacuzzis, saunas, hot yoga, and high-intensity activity for the first couple of days.
  • Hold off on active skincare ingredients (retinols, AHAs, BHAs) directly on the brow area for two weeks after each session.

Staying hydrated, eating well, and getting adequate sleep supports the body's ability to clear the fragmented pigment between sessions.

The honest part

Studio Kiku treats all skin tones, and safety is the first consideration in how the studio paces each treatment. That doesn't mean every set of brows can be fully removed.

Yellow undertones are the most unpredictable variable. The PicoWay removes red pigment reliably when red is the only colour present. Yellow pigment is more resistant, and the success rate is roughly fifty-fifty. If yellow pigment remains after the laser sessions, saline removal can be attempted as a last resort, though it's also not guaranteed to clear what the laser couldn't.

If the original pigment contains white, laser removal is not possible. White pigment doesn't respond to the laser at all.

For clients with darker complexions, the technician may take a more conservative approach, adjusting settings and allowing more time between sessions to minimise PIH risk. The priority is results without compromise to the skin. Complete removal is never guaranteed for any client regardless of skin tone. Most cases require three to six sessions for complete removal, spaced at least six to eight weeks apart.

When to wait before starting

If your brows were done recently, the studio recommends waiting at least three months before beginning removal. Freshly tattooed skin needs time to recover, and the pigment needs to settle fully before the laser can work effectively. Starting earlier tends to be both less effective and harder on the skin.
