Can PMU brows be removed in one session

Now and then, brow pigment lifts completely in a single laser session. Here is why it happens, why it is rare, and what the mirror hides afterward.

Before and after of laser PMU brow removal: thin grey brow pigment above closed eyes, then the same brows straight after a PicoWay session with the pigment lifted, the natural hairs still in place and the skin flushed pink

The photo above shows the same brows twice, a few minutes apart. In the top frame, a thin band of cool grey pigment sits under the natural hairs, with a bluish patch at the inner ends where the old work was packed in tighter. In the bottom frame, taken straight after one session on the PicoWay, that grey is gone. What is left is the client's own brow hair and a pink flush across the skin.

So the short answer to whether PMU brows can be removed in one session is yes, occasionally. It is also the exception, and an immediate after photo like this one is the start of a story rather than the end of it. Both halves matter if you are deciding whether to book.

Why brow pigment can lift so quickly

Permanent makeup behaves differently from a body tattoo under the laser. A body tattoo is usually packed deep and dense, and it can take 2 to 3 sessions before you notice a real difference. Brow pigment tends to sit closer to the surface and in a thinner layer, so the change is often visible the moment the session ends.

Billy DeCola, the founder of Studio Kiku, explains it this way on the FADED Podcast: "That's different than body tattoos because permanent makeup is usually pretty superficial. It's not very deep. It's usually not very saturated, so we normally see results right away."

When conditions line up, that shallow, light deposit can lift almost entirely in one visit. The variables Billy names are the same ones that decide any removal: how deep the pigment sits, how saturated it is, what type of pigment was used, whether scar tissue formed when the brows were first done, and how well your own body clears what the laser breaks up. A fine, older set of brows with a single dark tone and no scarring is the kind of case where a one-session result becomes possible.

What the immediate after photo does not show

Here is the part the before and after frame cannot capture. Most PMU pigment is not one colour. Manufacturers blend warm undertones, usually red or yellow, into brow pigment so it settles warm in the skin. The laser targets the dark tone you can see, and when that dark lifts, whatever was mixed underneath can be revealed.

Straight after a session, the skin is flushed, and that redness hides a lot. Billy describes the moment many clients have at the mirror: "A lot of times people look in the mirror right away and they're like, oh, wow, it's gone." He goes on: "So you walk outta here, you think everything is great, and when the irritation subsides, that's when you start realizing that there's yellow, a yellow undertone."

That is why the studio judges a brow removal result in the weeks after a session, once the skin has settled, not in the chair. The pigment also keeps breaking down after the appointment, because your body clears the fragments gradually. A brow that looks nearly clear on day one can look lighter still a few weeks later, or it can reveal a warm tone that needs its own session.

The undertone that decides the session count

If an undertone does show, it changes the plan. Red on its own usually responds well to the PicoWay's 532 wavelength. Yellow is the hard one, and Studio Kiku treats it gently rather than pushing harder, because an aggressive approach can make some yellow pigment turn darker instead of lighter. Any white blended into the pigment cannot be removed by laser at all.

The undertone also cannot be treated on the same day as the dark tone. It waits for a following session, and sessions are spaced at least 8 weeks apart. So a brow with a hidden warm tone, which describes most brows, is looking at more than one visit even when the first one looks dramatic. Complete brow removal typically falls somewhere in the range of 3 to 6 sessions, and it is never guaranteed.

You can read more about how the studio approaches this work on the PMU removal page, and about what to do in the days after a session on the laser PMU aftercare page.

A one-session result is a bonus, not a plan

This photo went up on Instagram with a caveat attached, and the caveat matters. A single-session lift is rare, and results vary from person to person. Nobody can tell from looking at your brows before the first session whether you will be the exception, and a test spot on one section of a brow is not a reliable predictor either, because brows are rarely tattooed evenly from front to tail.

If you plan to have new brows done in a different shape, the old pigment needs to be fully gone first, and that usually takes the full process rather than one appointment. If you only want the brows lighter so an artist can work over the same shape, the goal is different and the count is often lower. Telling the team which of those you want is the most useful thing you can bring to a consultation.

Billy's own position on the timeline is plain: on average, removing brow pigment completely without damaging the skin takes several sessions. The photo above is real, and it is also the best case. Planning around the best case is how people end up disappointed.

Booking a brow assessment

If your brows have faded to grey, turned warm, or simply no longer suit you, the team can look at the colour, the depth and the shape, and explain what a realistic number of sessions might be for your pigment. Consultations are free, and there is no commitment to start treatment. You can book a consultation online at the Vancouver, Langley or Vaughan studio.
