Most people who book laser PMU brow removal want to know one thing before they sit in the chair: what will actually be different when they walk out. Some picture their old brows gone in a single visit. Others assume nothing much will happen the first time.
The truth sits between those two. One session does real, visible work, but it's the opening step in a process your body finishes over the following weeks. Knowing what that first session moves, and what it doesn't, is the difference between feeling encouraged and feeling let down.
What actually happens during the session
The session itself is quick. Studio Kiku treats the brows with the PicoWay, the picosecond laser by Candela, matching the wavelength to the pigment colour in the brow. The laser passes over the tattooed area and the brows are iced right after to keep the skin calm.
One worry comes up constantly: does the laser hurt the hair. It doesn't. The PicoWay does not damage hair follicles, so the brow hair itself is left alone. The target is the pigment sitting in the skin, not the hair growing through it.
What you'll see right away
Permanent makeup is different from a body tattoo. It's usually shallow and not heavily saturated, so the reaction shows up fast.
"You'll most likely see results right away," says Billy DeCola, Studio Kiku founder. "That's different than body tattoos, because permanent makeup is usually pretty superficial. It's not very deep, it's usually not very saturated, so we normally see results right away. That's just the very beginning of the process. It takes weeks or months for your body to have time to break down that pigment."
So the fading you notice the day of is genuine, but it isn't the finish line. The laser breaks the pigment into fragments small enough for your body to carry away, and that clearing keeps going long after you leave. What you see at week six often looks better than what you saw on day one.
Why the colour can change first
Here's the part that surprises people. When the laser lifts the top layer of a brow, it can reveal a colour underneath that you didn't know was there, usually a warm red or yellow. Artists layer more than one pigment into permanent makeup, so a brow that reads dark brown on the surface can hide an undertone below it.
Billy explains what's really going on: "When we hit that pigment, most of the time it lifts right away. That pigment will lift. But what happens is it reveals what's underneath." The brow isn't turning red. The dark layer is coming off and showing the undertone that was always mixed in.
That's normal, and for most brows those warm tones are treatable in later sessions with a different wavelength. It's worth knowing before your first visit so a colour shift doesn't catch you off guard.
How much closer one session gets you to done
Complete PMU brow removal takes three to six sessions on average, and Studio Kiku never guarantees full removal. So one session is meaningful progress, not a finished result.
Sessions are spaced a minimum of six to eight weeks apart to give your body time to clear the loosened pigment. For warmer tones like reds and yellows, the team often recommends waiting closer to twelve weeks, because those colours need a more aggressive wavelength and the skin needs longer to recover. Coming back too early just adds discomfort without adding fade.
The honest part
One session won't tell you the whole story, and that's the point of setting expectations early. Yellow undertones are the hardest case: laser clears them roughly half the time, and there's no way to know for certain until you try. If the laser can't lift a stubborn yellow, saline removal becomes the fallback option, though it's a last resort rather than a starting point.
Some brows also can't be removed completely, no matter how many sessions. Studio Kiku would rather tell you that honestly up front than have you disappointed three sessions in. If a single session is all it took, everyone would only need one. The reality is that good removal is patient, staged work.
