Windsor is the southernmost city in Canada and it sits directly across the river from Detroit, close enough that the two downtowns are a twelve to twenty minute drive apart before border processing. The Ambassador Bridge alone carries over a quarter of all merchandise trade between Canada and the United States by value. Detroit has one of the strongest tattoo traditions in North America, and its Motor City Tattoo Expo ran its thirtieth edition in 2026.

The city runs on the automotive sector and is in the middle of an unusually visible transition. Stellantis restored a third shift at Windsor Assembly in February 2026, taking the plant to about 6,000 workers, while NextStar Energy, the first commercial-scale EV battery plant in Canada, opened in March 2026 with roughly 2,500 jobs. Forty-five minutes east, Leamington and Kingsville hold the largest concentrated greenhouse cluster in North America, bright enough at night to be visible from space.

Windsor is also the most diverse city in Ontario outside the GTA, with Arab-Canadians making up 9.3% of the population, and it holds about 24,000 students across the University of Windsor and St. Clair College. The other thing worth saying plainly is distance: Toronto is close to four hours away, longer than Toronto to Ottawa. Anything specialized has generally meant that drive.
