St. Catharines is the largest city in the Niagara region and home to roughly a third of its people. The Welland Canal built it, letting ships bypass the falls and turning the city into a shipbuilding and milling hub, and the canal still moves millions of tonnes of cargo a year. Brock University sits in the downtown core with just over 19,000 students, and its School of Fine and Performing Arts is part of the downtown skyline.

The region skews notably older than the province, with a median age of about 46 against Ontario's 40.7, and four Niagara municipalities are over 50.
