St. Albert sits on the Sturgeon River immediately northwest of Edmonton, and the two cities share a boundary along St. Albert's south and east sides. Father Albert Lacombe founded the mission on Mission Hill in 1861, which makes it, in the City's words, the oldest non-fortified community in Alberta, and the Father Lacombe Chapel is the oldest building in the province. The City counted 72,316 residents in its 2024 municipal census, and the median household income of $117,000 in the 2021 Census sits well above Edmonton's $90,000 and Canada's $84,000.
A St. Albert studio serves northwest Edmonton as much as St. Albert itself. St. Albert Trail, which is Highway 2, is the arterial road between the two cities, Anthony Henday Drive passes the city to the southeast, and the Edmonton neighbourhoods on the other side of the line, from the Big Lake area and Goodridge Corners to the Palisades and Castle Downs, are a 13 to 20 minute drive without traffic. Downtown Edmonton is 15 km away. St. Albert Trail is still building out at the Erin Ridge North end: Chick-fil-A opened at 815 St. Albert Trail in May 2026, and the East Village, a $176 million mixed-use development by Landrex and Fort McKay First Nation, is under construction there through 2027. In the 2021 Census, 9,365 St. Albert residents worked in Edmonton and 5,980 Edmonton residents worked in St. Albert, so people already cross that line for work in both directions.
Edmonton's median age of 36.8 is the youngest of Canada's five cities with more than a million people, and the Edmonton Tattoo and Arts Festival at the EXPO Centre drew over 450 artists in April 2026. Steele Barracks, the main site of 3rd Canadian Division Support Base Edmonton, is a 16 minute drive to the northeast of St. Albert, with 5,829 Regular Force members, 403 reservists and 506 civilian employees in National Defence's count.
