Halifax is the largest city in Atlantic Canada and the place the region travels to for anything specialized. The QEII Health Sciences Centre is the largest adult academic health sciences centre east of Quebec, and patients from New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island are referred here regardless of where they live. The airport is the eighth busiest in Canada and serves Newfoundland as well as the Maritimes.

Six degree-granting universities sit inside one mid-sized city, putting roughly 32,500 students in the population, including NSCAD, a dedicated art and design school. The tattoo scene here has always punched above the size of the metro, and the North End around Gottingen Street is where most of it is concentrated.

Halifax grew faster than almost anywhere in Canada through the early 2020s, adding about 19,000 people in the year to July 2023, roughly 4.1%. Growth has cooled since. What has not changed is that specialized removal work is something Atlantic Canada has largely had to travel for, and a picosecond laser in the hands of someone who uses it every day is a different proposition from a general aesthetics room with an older machine.
